Jane* had been homeless and living at the Austin Street Shelter when she was introduced to Catholic Charities Dallas for the first time. After spending more than three years in shelters and on the streets, Jane was overjoyed with the opportunity to move into St. Jude Forest.
St. Jude Center Forest Lane opened in August 2018. The center has 104 efficiency, residential units for individuals who are 55 and over. Jane was among the first residents to move in and was grateful to finally have her own space.
“I have a nice warm bed, my own private bathroom, my own TV, and peace of mind,” Jane said. “I feel safe because I can lock my door, and I do not have to worry about anyone stealing from me. I wake up smiling.”
Jane said the staff at St. Jude is always available and willing to help her. She is incredibly grateful for the guidance she received from her case managers. They helped her obtain her birth certificate and apply for food stamps and Medicare.
“If it weren’t for Catholic Charities, I would probably still be homeless and in the shelter,” Jane said. “They have helped me feel more positive about myself. I have a new outlook on life because of them.”
Recently, Jane started working at the St. Jude coffee bar. The job has given her a sense of purpose and something to look forward to every day. Additionally, it has given her the opportunity to be part of a community and support herself, and she is so grateful.
“I love helping the residents and making them happy, and they look forward to me being there,” Jane said. “I’m thankful every day and appreciate being here.”
At Catholic Charities Dallas, our goal is to make a profound difference in the lives of those facing housing insecurity, including Jane and the hundreds of others we serve at our St. Jude Centers.
